America and its influential role across the world can be seen over many of the exports it has introduced that have changed pop culture in human history ever since its birth. From the sounds of the 1950s that gave us the birth of ‘rock and roll’, the freedom the motor vehicle industry gave us when exploring the open roads, to allowing us to have freedom to express our voices to be heard through different ways in arts, music, and movements. The independence of America is rooted in music that has challenged barriers in establishments for those who have sought out freedom through their art, in this case music. Join us this July 4th as we celebrate the music that has shaped independence and helped build the sound of America.
Works like Antonin Dvorak’s ‘New World Symphony’ is in response to the west building a sound for America that broke out of traditional rules that were established in Europe and in the East. Dvorak with his help from his friend and colleague Henry Thacker Burleigh built a sound with history and themes from cultures already established in the early U.S. With influences from historical African American spirituals, we hear these themes as examples in movement II - Largo from New World Symphony that are directly influenced from Burliegh’s years of study and writings like in ‘From the Southland’. A collection of recordings of established spirituals that helped archive culture and history through music. It is within these themes that we hear the new influence of the American sound in the orchestral sound that had never been previously heard.

In 1977 Nasa’s Voyager 1 launched a golden record for interstellar travel with one of the songs being ‘Dark was the night, cold was the ground’ by American gospel blues singer, Blind Willie Johnson.
Florence Price’s Symphony no. 1 premiered in 1933 at the Chicago symphony orchestra making her the first Black female composer to be performed by a major orchestra.
In 1924 a jazz-influenced classical piece of music premiered that brought an American sound to orchestral work written by George Gershwin which today is held as one of the most notable American music ever written.
America in WWII found hope in its music with one theme given to soldiers coming back home from overseas with a song by Duke Ellington called, ‘I’m beginning to see the light’, a song that gave optimism and hope to Amricans during the war.
In 1966, using non-traditional instrumentation due to financial limitations, Ennio Morricone would write ‘The Ecstacy of Gold’, featured on the American film The Good The Bad, and The Ugly, which would become an influential sound for western films.
